Lacrosse Falls To #4 Keiser In High Scoring Contest

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's lacrosse team scored a season best 16 goals on Wednesday afternoon but it wasn't enough to defeat fourth-ranked Keiser. AMU fell to the Seahawks 25-16.
 
Keiser scored the game's first three goals before AMU netted three of the next four to pull within one, 4-3. Georgia Miller scored the first two for Ave Maria followed by Aiyanah Simms at the 24:08 mark.
 
A Karina Shaffrey goal 10 minutes in broke up another three goal spurt by the Seahawks to make it 7-4. KU scored five of the next seven to take a 12-6 lead late in the first. Both AMU goals in that span came from Simms.
 
The Blue and Green pulled to within four, 12-8, with 5:51 to play in the opening half after goals by Simms and Katelyn Sherman. Alexa Keeler scored just before the end of the half to break a four goal run by Keiser to make it 16-9 at the break.
 
Alexis Smich, Sherman, and Simms scored three early goals for AMU in the second half to cut the deficit to five, 17-12. Keiser extended their lead to eight, 21-13, with 13:12 to play. After back-to-back goals by Stephanie Hilker and Simms, the Seahawks scored the next four to make it 25-15. Miller added a goal with 1:01 remaining to make the score 25-16.
 
Keiser held a 24-19 edge in draw controls and a slim 29-26 advantage in ground balls. The Seahawks took 35 shots on goal while the Lady Gyrenes finished with 23 shots on frame.
 
Simms had a big day for AMU with six goals on nine shots. She also had two groundballs and two caused turnovers. She was 2-for-4 on free position shots.
 
Miller and Sherman each finished with three goals. Miller led AMU with 10 draw controls and five ground balls while Sherman tallied a team-best four caused turnovers.
 
Andie Wagner took the loss in goal. She made 10 saves in net.
 
The two teams will face off again on April 7 at 1 p.m. in West Palm Beach.
